If you are visiting Latin America and Peru in specifically, then there is one place that you must see- Machu Picchu!
Mistakenly known as the lost city of Inca, it is located at 2,430 meters above sea level. The city is between two mountains- Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu and surrounded by river Urubamba at the base of the cliffs. Once you get there you will be fascinated by the ancient city and the splendid view over the two valleys and surrounding nature- lush rainforest, beautiful flowers and hummingbirds filling the air with their songs.
Built in the Inca style for emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472), it has polished dry stone walls and is an amazing example of Inca civilization. The ancient city features 3 main structures in the Sacred District of Machu Picchu- the Room of the Three Windows, the Temple of the Sun and Hitching Post of the Sun.
Most of the building are reconstructed and nowadays it has become one of the most popular destinations. In 1981 Machu Picchu was declared as Peruvian Historical Sanctuary and in 1983- a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A worldwide Internet poll voted it to be one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
If you are planning a visit there you can stay at hotel La Casona which offers excellent accommodation and the chance to try the quality local cuisine! There are residents living in the area who provide food for the restaurant, so tasting the traditional meals is guaranteed!
