We’ve all done it. Spent 3 hours queuing for some tourist attractions that the tour guide said was a must see only be left feeling a bit meh and exclaiming “is that it?” Every second of your holiday counts, so don’t waste any by visiting these tourist traps.
Times Square, New York, USA
It looks so iconic in the movies but in reality it’s just dirty, overcrowded and filled with one too many Spongebob impersonators and every chain restaurant known to man.
Instead, go a few blocks east and soak up real culture by visiting the New York Public Library.
Hollywood Walk of Fame, Hollywood, USA
If you’re hoping you might bump into a few celebs here, you will be very disappointed. It’s just an ordinary sidewalk, filled with tacky souvenir shops and plenty of tourists.
Head to the historic Chinese Theatre of sip a cocktail at Chateau Marmont and be sure to keep your eyes peeled!
Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco, USA
This waterfront neighbourhood of San Francisco is described as a must see for all visitors, but you’ll be hard pressed to find any locals riding the cable cars to Ghiradelli Square.
For a more authentic San Francisco, explore the tiny streets and nearby alleys of Telegraph Hill
London Eye, London, UK
If you’ve been on one Ferris wheel, you’ve been on them all – need I say more?
There are plenty of fantastic viewpoints around London, like St Paul’s Cathedral or the top of the Shard. Or how about renting a bike and cycling around Hyde Park or enjoying afternoon tea at Harrods.
The Liberty Bell, Philadelphia, USA
Philadelphia is filled with history, so don’t waste your time queuing up to look at some lame cracked bell.
Go and see Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest street in America, which is just a ten minute walk away instead.
Niagara Falls, New York, USA/Canada
The world is full of breath taking waterfalls, and this isn’t one of them. The view is obscured with ugly sky scrapers, depressing casinos and an army of tourists in the obligatory plastic mac uniform.
You’re better off heading for the Canadian border, ordering some poutine and calling it a day.
The Four Corners, USA
The idea of standing in four states (New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah) at once sounds pretty cool, but let’s be honest, it really isn’t, especially after a 3 hour car trip to get there.
Head to the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado, where you will see some of the darkest, starriest skies and contemplate what you’re doing with your life.
The Mona Lisa, The Louvre Museum, Paris, France
Sure, she’s iconic, but if you waste an hour of your life queuing to get a 20 second glimpse of her, you’re a fool.
Go and check out some of the other incredible art work on offer and some of Da Vinci’s lesser known works like St John the Baptist or Virgin on the Rocks. I hope you liked our tourist attractions ideas.
