Have you ever watched a movie and wondered “Where is this place? I want to visit it!” ? Today we share with you some of the most famous castles that appeared in movies. Castles are very often used for filming. Not only they are perfect structures for fantasy or history movies, but many directors have understood that choosing a real decor is the perfect way to make a scene look real.
Can you recognise any of these movie castles?
1. Alnwick Castle
Located in Northumberland, England, Alnwick Castle has been very often used for film making. Starting with the famous Brit TV show Black Adder with Rowan Atkinson, the castle can also be seen in Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and last it was “playing” in the Harry Potter films as the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
2. Arundel Castle
The Arundel Castle in West Sussex, England was seen in some episodes of Doctor Who. You can see it also in The Madness of King George , as well as some other not so famous movies
3. Bamburgh Castle
Another castle in Northumberland, England is Bamburgh. It was used as a location for movies like King Arthur, Robin Hood with Russel Crowe, El Cid and Ivanhoe. Nowadays it is property of Armstrong family, but is opened for public visits.
4. Belvoir Castle
Belvoir castle in Leicestershire County, England has gained some popularity thanks to films like Young Sherlock Holmes and The Da Vinci Code.
5. Broughton Castle
The Broughton Castle is located in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England.Some of the notable films made here are Shakespeare in Love, The Madness of King George and Three Men and a Baby. If you want to visit it, it is opened for public.
6. Dover Castle
Dover Castle located in Kent, England used to be known as “the key to England”. Nowadays it has been used as a scene for The Wind in the Willows, The Other Boleyn Girl and in Doctor Who series.
7. Eilean Donan Castle
You will find the Eilean Donan Castle on a small island in Loch Duich, Western Highlands of Scotland. Since 1940’s it has been used for many movies and series. Some of them are: the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, Made of Honor and in some series of Highlander.
8. Castle Howard
Castle Howard was featured in only few notable films. It gained some fame due to Garfield 2: A Tale of Two Kitties and Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon.
9. Raglan Castle
Even though Raglan Castle seems like one from a fantasy novel and has very interesting architecture, it was used in only few projects. Nevertheless they are notable names- Time Bandits, the famous Merlin BBC series and The Song Remains the Same(the Led Zeppelin movie).
10. Palace of Versailles
